When I was in art school one of my design Professors told me that not many Graphic Designers know how to draw. He said that having that skill would work to my advantage. With that being said I was floored my first year of college to know that many students I went to class with did not know how to draw. I mean one would think that at a prestigious Ivy League art school such as Pratt Institute that all students would have impecable artistic ability, this I found not to be true (for some). There were a few majors that you didn't exactly need to know how to draw like Architecture, Construction Management, Design Management-but thats a graduate program. Anyway the point I'm making here is that I believe drawing, jotting, sketching, getting ideas down on paper, are the basis of ALL ideas and inventions. Just think about it everything we can see, touch, and sometimes feel was designed by an artist. Someone who had a wonderful idea in their head that translated it on paper FIRST. Honestly how can you really call yourself a designer if you can't at least jot your ideas down on paper. Many designers today rely so heavily on the computers to get their projects done, and that's great I'm not knocking computers, but as I remember Professor Goslin saying "The computer is JUST a tool."
